Artesia School

Last Thursday concluded, complete with a graduation and ice cream social, a really fun "school project"! It was called Artesia school. It included all the third grade classes. They were assigned identities (that were real children from the Artesia school of the past) and the year was 1884. There were all sorts of things they could do for extra points (they needed 1000 to graduate, but in the end the teacher allowed those that had over 1000 to share - so everyone graduated) ... some that we did were: dressing up (she did that everyday), taking lunch in a basket or pail (everyday on that too), taking books in a belt (again, every day), reciting a poem, watching a movie about pioneer life and reporting on it to class, reading a book about pioneer times and writing a report - then sharing with class, writing a story, drawing your school as it is and how you imagine it in 20 years, diorama of a one room school house, stitch your name on fabric, make a marble bag, we brought in an heirloom - her baby ring, she did a dance with Jericho - in front of the class, she weaved a potholder, she made a musical instrument, I put her hair in rags for curls, and a few other things ... needless to say, she actually earned her 1000 points (in fact, she had over 1700) and I am very proud of her! We really got into it and I thought it was fun! Here's a few pics:

rags (I had to cut up some old jammie shorts I had - lol)

curls

these are graduation day:
they began by getting up as "families" ... Annicka was "Ann Bish" - she was
five years old and had a twin, "Nettie", and two other sisters as well!

getting her certificate from "Ms Young"

I was in shock when her hand shot right up for sharing - she was the first
to get up there too - she recited a poem!

then she did her little dance, Jericho wasn't there - so her little
friend stepped in for him - I created it in such a way that Annicka
could lead Jericho easily (they hold hands through almost all of it)
so it was easy to just get someone to help out too! it was so cute!

then was the ice cream social part - yummy sundaes

then some outdoor fun ... I loved that the teacher actually
played with them!
